With the NCAA Tournament in full swing, I figured what better time to go to the well and use the mascot deathmatch card.  This tournament will feature the mascots from the Sweet Sixteen teams, with each matchup mirroring the NCAA bracket.  There are a wide array of different mascot types in the tourney, so it should lead to some interesting results.

Rules:

  1. Each matchup is a fight to the death.
  2. Competitors are allowed to bring any item that is generally associated with them.  Example: Batman would have all his gadgets, Link would have his sword, Indiana Jones would have a whip, etc.  The items the fighters have will be noted in the blog.
  3. Voting takes place from time the blog is posted until midnight ET that night.
  4. Tiebreaker goes to a coin flip.
  5. If you have any theories on how you think the results of a match would go, please add them in the comments section.  Bantering is half the fun.

Florida Gator vs. UCLA Bruin

Tale of the Tape: Coming out with an absolute heavyweight matchup right off the bat.  Alligator vs. Bear, and in this case both seem willing and able to stand on their hind legs.

Stanford Cardinal vs. Dayton Flyer

Tale of the Tape: Not exactly a headlining fight like our first match, but this should still be interesting.  The Stanford Cardinal is more of a representation of the red color that the team wears, but the Stanford Tree will be duking it out in this tournament.  According to Wikipedia, the tree is based upon a giant redwood  in Palo Alto.  So we have a big ol’ redwood tree with eyes, a mouth, and legs taking on a pilot.  Who ya got?

Virginia Cavalier vs. Michigan State Spartan

Tale of the Tape: In our first all-human matchup, we have a Cavalier taking on a Spartan.  The Cavalier has his horse and trusty sword, while the Spartan is basically one of the badasses you know and love from “300”.

Iowa State Cyclone vs. UConn Husky

iowa-state uconn

Tale of the Tape: In one of the more unique matchups of the first round, we have the Iowa State Cyclone taking on the UConn Husky.  As you can see above, it looks like the Cyclone is a giant cardinal that got into Ed Hochuli’s medicine cabinet.  Meanwhile, the Husky is just a badass dog ready to eat.

Arizona Wildcat vs. San Diego State Aztec

arizona aztec

Tale of the Tape: In a deathmatch that has likely taken place before, we have a wildcat from the Southwest region of North America taking on an Aztec Warrior.  It looks like the Aztec is rolling in with a shield, but with no spears while the Wildcat has his teeth and claws ready.

Baylor Bear vs. Wisconsin Badger

baylor Bucky_Badger

Tale of the Tape: The Baylor Bear is one of the strongest animals in the world while the Wisonsin Badger is an ornery, tough-as-nails fighter.  A quick glance at Youtube shows that the first battle was a draw.  Who rolls on in this tournament, David or Goliath?

Kentucky Wildcat vs. Louisville Cardinal

kentucky-logo lrg_louisville_cardinals109

Tale of the Tape: A full-grown wildcat takes on a human-sized, angry cardinal in the battle for Kentucky.  Does the wildcat’s predatory instinct give him an advantage, or does the cardinal’s ability to fly put him over the top?

Tennessee Volunteer vs. Michigan Wolverine

vols wolverine

Tale of the Tape: In our final matchup of the first round, we have the Tennessee Volunteer squaring off against the Michigan Wolverine.  The Vol rolls in with his musket and signature raccoon hat while the wolverine shows up as fearless as ever.
